It’s amazing how many people begin their day – not with a sense of inspiration, but with resignation, depression, and even desperation. Their alarm clock rings and instead of leaping out of bed filled with thankfulnes for another day of life, their thoughts plummet into despair as they realize their day is filled with tasks labeled “Must Do” – none of which are things that they love to do!

Statistics reveal that many people feel so despondent about geting up and facing their daly toils and responsibilities that more people suffer from heart attacks at seven o’clock on Monday morning than at any other time of the week. This could be termed the “Monday morning heart attack blues.” And if that many people are having heart attacks from the thought of work, imagine how many people are making themselves sick in other ways.

The irony is that it’s just as simple to fill your day with things you love to so as it is to fill your day with things you must do, need to do, or dread doing! We sometimes forget that we have the power to create the life we love. In fact, when we listen to the wisdom of our intuition, or inner voice, we discover that we are most fulfilled when we’re doing what we love, and loving what we do.

Beware the risks in prescription drugs

Modern medicines can work miracles, but hazards are associated with them also.

Is that Prozac you’re taking? For what reason? The drug has been approved mainly as an anti-depressant. But despite reports of drastic side effects, some doctors prescribe it to treat weight loss.

And is that Seldane in your cabinet? Do you know that when taken with certain antibiotics, this anti-allergy drug can produce heart problems? Does your doctor even know that? Better make sure; the combo can kill you.

More that 1.5 billion prescriptions are written each year. Most are safe, but adverse reactions cause 659,000 hospitalization annually, costing $27 billion. Prescription error is the second-leading cause of malpractice suits, accounting for more than $250 million in settlements.

The elderly are most vulnerable. The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that 25% of all older Americans are prescribed at least one “inappropriate and dangerous drug” each year. Other studies say that 3,300 older Americans die of ulcers caused by arthritis medication each year and 1,500 from hip injuries suffered during drug-induced falls.

LIKE THAT YOUR BODY IS SHAPED LIKE AN APPLE, PEAR OR BANANA?

Just finished talking to a few patients this morning about working out and keeping ahead of the losing muscle battle. Here’s the thing…if you’re not lifting weights, you’re body is going to soften..Yes EVEN IF YOU’RE ON THE TREADMILL OR STAIRSTEPPER. Patients are constantly telling me about how they are training only to realize they are NOT training/working out at all. You CANNOT consider the type of work you do as working out. The truth is: your body will adapt in a few weeks to whatever you are constantly doing and will no longer benefit from that training regimen. In other words, if you carry shingles up a ladder every day, that does not mean your working out., sure, you’re tired, sure, you feel like you’re working out…but you’re NOT. Adaptation means that your body gets used to whatever task you ask it to do and will be able to perform that particular thing, but nothing more than that.

Just look in the mirror… if you look like a banana, an apple or a pear…..the working out you think you do at your job ISN’T WORKING!! I don’t know about you but I’d rather not look like a piece of fruit!

It’s a common misunderstanding I am coming to realize that the average person doesn’t realize that working out entails lifting weights, just imagine how frail most older people look as they’ve gotten older. As we age we have a tendency to lose 25% of our muscle mass, now if you’re losing 25% of that which you don’t have much of already…that would be a FRAIL looking older person… or YOU when you get there.

I realize that most people have no idea how or what to do in the gym, so what I’ve done is worked with patients who are not interested in going to the gym either because of fear of not knowing, because of economics or because of geographical location to a gym. I’ve helped them put together a way to train at home with homemade equipment in many cases or minimal weight equipment and got them on the right track to stopping the MUSH from happening.

If you never work out, you’ll be shaped like the piece of fruit you see in others, if you never work out you’ll for sure be less healthy then you could otherwise be. Keep in mind that having a stronger body means that you’ll be able to prevent or slow down that frail look that we always see in the elderly, of course we see it because: THEY NEVER WORK OUT!!!!

Here it is in a nutshell: You have to eat right, exercise, get enough rest, think that health is your right, and have good nerve flow. If you do these things you’ll effectively become like super human compared to the others around you. Your body is designed to be healthy, the biggest reason most of you get sick is because of what you’ve done to yourself up until now.

Just think about it… You wouldn’t expect your car to run very well if you put watered down gasoline in it, but you water down your nutrition every day with soda, coffee, juice, alcohol, McDonalds, Burger King, or just JUNK food period and ecpect your body to run well… does that make sense? NOOO!! And then when you get sick, you actually ask..Why am I getting sick? Are you kidding? Have you ever heard this saying: Garbage in Garbage out? Of course you have! That’s why you’re sick and sickly….Most of the time. Get off of the genetic or heredity hunt and realize that if you continue to eat bad, not getting enough rest, not exercising and not having a strong immune system…..YOU’RE GOING TO BE SICK!! A LOT!

The Dilemma: Keeping your body from turning to MUSH!

WORKING OUT IS THE ANSWER TO A  MUSH FREE BODY

Throughout my career I’ve struggled with patients who have no idea that their body will turn to mush if they don’t work out. Sure the’re training in the gym alright, doing things like running on the Treadmill, or using the Elyptical machine, or better yet their taking classes in Kick Boxing and Taebo, but they’re NOT working out their muscle. Here’s the facts, you’ve probably seen or heard this recently on television in an advertisement for some protein drink. They say that after the age of 40 we tend to lose 8% of muscle every 10 years. We used to simply say that you’ll love 25% of your muscle mass as you get older.

Both are true! In other words, getting older means we’re destined to be frail and old looking if we stay on the path of our parents and MOST people. Even a person who is thin or lean we might say, even that person is turning to mush as they age. You have to work that muscle on your body with weights, or resistance exercises, it’s not possible to do all the aerobics out there and still keep your muscle in good shape.

But just about everyone I talk to believes that they are training good enough to maintain at least their muscles. It makes me crazy to hear that and to have to explain that to my patients and non-patients about the truth. I eventually have to tell them that they “WiLL TURN INTO MUSH”, if they don’t change their ways.

I find that even when people DO workout “with weights” they don’t typically know what to do… or that they can lift much more with their legs for instance then they are able to with their arms. Patients are always trying to do 10lbs of curls with their biceps when they can lift 25lbs easily, if you don’t push your body you won’t get results…does that make sense?

The Results I’m talking about is NOT getting large muscles, although who wouldn’t want to be stronger? It’s about getting your body to change it’s shape and the only way is to change the muscle…. Listen, if you already look like a PEAR and you do aerobics to lose weight, (thinking that you’re actually working your muscles out), you’re just going to become a smaller PEAR!! Is that alright with you? Tightening or toning the muscles means you have to workout with weights or at least some good resistance training to get the muscle to respond otherwise you’ll get MUSH. Just look at Jack LaLanne who’s 95 years old…he looks like he could easily be 75. Because his WHOLE LIFE he’s worked out, ate right and made sure to get enough rest!

Wait, that’s exactly what I preach in my office every day. That’s exactly how I live my life as well….Move over Jack!!
